Unthinkables Videos

This past school year I used Michelle Gracia Winner’s Social Thinking books to help teach social skills to some of my students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). I decided to order some of the books from the series after reading the excellent reviews from Speech Room News and other SLP bloggers. It is difficult to know where to start with so many choices. I consulted with a Facebook SLP page and the Social Thinking website to help me understand which books to order to help my students (I work with 4th-5th grade students.). I ordered the You are A Social Detective and Superflex: A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum Package.

So once I got the books I didn’t know where to start. I found the answer from Jenna at Speech Room News. She wrote a post about getting started and it was so helpful. I followed her directions and we read You are A Social Detective. This book covers some of the terms that are introduced in Social Thinking and is a great place to start.

Next we started on Supeflex Comic Book. This introduces the students to Superflex and the Unthinkables. These are the main characters that help the students relate to different social skills.

The students that I used the program with are very visual learners. They had trouble seeing social deficits in themselves but could easily identify them in others. I wanted to use videos to help the students understand the different behaviors of the Unthinkable characters. I did a search on YouTube and came up with thousands of videos. Several videos were made by students in schools with their teachers and therapist. They were great but I wanted some clips from popular shows and movies. Here is the list of videos I found. You can use this link to my Unthinkable Videos playlist or click on each listing to view the videos.

Worry Wall – Kung Fu Panda 3

Grump Grumpaniny – Lucy – Peanuts (Crabby Little Girl-Clip)

Rock Brain – Sheldon’s Sitting Spot – The Big Bang Theory

Brain Eater – Jimmy Dean Commercial-Spaced Out

One-Sided Sid – Life Skills: Listening

Topic Twistermeister – “Up” Dug the Talking Dog

Space Invaders – Sesame Street Jude Law – Cling

D.O.F. Destruction Of Fun – Sesame Street “Be A Good Sport”

Glassman – Can You Teach My Alligator Manners? Good Sport Gator

Mean Jean – Miss Bossy’s Pirate Class

WasFunnyOnce – Minnions Despicable Me 2 Trailer

Un-Wonderer – Parenthood Boy in Class

Energy Hare-y – Elf Santa Announcement

Body Snatcher – Flummox and Friends: Part of the Group

Before we began watching the videos I gave the students a Unthinkables Video Matching sheet. As they watched the videos they completed the matching sheet. I was pleased at how quickly they identified the Unthinkable that invaded the characters brain.

This activity was a great additional introduction to the Unthinkable characters. I hope you find this collection of Unthinkables Videos helpful in your therapy room.

  1. Your site name is similar to mine so I had to check it out. I use Michelle Winners materials also so you might want to check out what I have too at inspontaneousspeech.com. I have a lot of free activities that can be used with groups. I like your blog and the video list is great.
